Abstract. Morphological and behavioural characteristics are investigated for a gynandromorph of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria , appearing under isolated rearing conditions in the laboratory. It has both male and female external reproductive organs bilaterally. The body size and dimensions are similar to a normal male. Morphometric traits (fore wing length/maximum head width ratio and fore wing length/hind femur length ratio) of the gynandromorph are typical for the values of solitarious locusts. When the gynandromorph is placed into an arena holding ten sexually mature gregarious females, it shows a distinct male behaviour: it jumps on a female and tries to mate with her. When kept together with males, males recognize this gynandromorph as a female because some of them try to mount, although no successful copulation is observed. The results suggest that the gynandromorph might have had a female-specific pheromone. Dissection reveals that the gynandromorph has no testis but abnormal ovaries containing vitellogenic oocytes. These observations indicate that the gynandromorph obtained has a mixture of male and female morphological characteristics and behaves like a male but is recognized as a female by conspecific males. 相似文献

Abstract. The neuropeptide [His7 ]-corazonin, present in the central nervous system and corpus cardiacum, is known to mimic a 'gregarizing' effect on phase-related morphometric ratios (hind femur length/maximum head width and fore wing length/hind femur length) when injected into locusts reared in isolation. However, an albino strain is known to exhibit phase-specific changes in these ratios in response to rearing density, although it is deficient in [His7 ]-corazonin. To examine whether there is a second factor responsible for this phenomenon, perhaps a corazonin-like factor that has lost its dark-colour inducing activity, methanol extracts of corpora cardiaca taken from crowd-reared albino nymphs of Locusta migratoria are injected into isolated-reared second-stadium albino nymphs and reared to adults in isolation. The hind femur length/maximum head width and fore wing length/hind femur length ratios are significantly different from those of control oil-injected counterparts, and shift significantly towards the values typical for crowd-reared gregarized individuals. The relationship between diapause and cold hardiness of the house spider, Achaearanea tepidariorum, differed geographically. In a cool-temperate population, enhanced chilling tolerance and supercooling ability were observed in diapause individuals, whereas a subtropical population showed only chilling tolerance. Because this spider is considered to be of tropical origin, it would follow that the ancestral diapause of this spider was equipped with chilling tolerance, but not with an increased supercooling ability. It seems that the ability to lower the supercooling point evolved through natural selection in the course of expansion of this species to the northern climates. Copyright 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
